The Beginning of Jillian’s Graduation Trip

Beautiful morning to begin our journey to pick up granddaughter, Jillian in Sacramento, CA. Got on the way by 7:30 am, headed to Miamisburg Ohio.

Decided to stay at Star City Brewery. This was our second time staying here. Good beers and several good restaurants. We ate at the Lucky Star Restaurant. Tasty Mexican food.

Took a walk around town and saw gorgeous old Victorian homes and the Hamburger Wagon.

Interesting history of the wagon: River towns of the Miami Valley were decimated by the infamous Great Flood of 1913. Miamisburg was no exception as floodwaters from the Great Miami River caused untold damage to this small community. As Miamisburg was virtually under water, the Red Cross set up a tent city for the refugees at the top of Mound Hill. Sherman “Cocky” Porter, a Miamisburg resident, volunteered to help provide food for the flood victims and relief workers.

As the cold March winds blew through the camp, Porter knew that whatever food was to be provided needed to be warm, nutritious and readily available in large quantities. Porter had just the right answer. Utilizing a favorite family recipe, Porter began serving up hot, tasty hamburgers to everyone in the camp for many days. These sandwiches were a huge hit and were extremely popular throughout the community.

Headed to another Harvest Host in Colona, Illinois tonight — Lavendar Crest Winery

August 21

Lavender Crest Winery is a gorgeous event venue. Huge grounds and large banquet hall.

We each had a flight of 5 wines and an artichoke dip appetizer.

We all needed a walk so off we went around the grounds.

Love this zinnia.

Will be headed to Iowa tomorrow.

Stayed in Carson, Iowa at the Midwest Farm Oasis, a Harvest Host with open farmland. Kristen, Matt and Miles were great hosts. They had s’more packets made up for us and some local farm products for sale. They had a mown path along the soybeans and corn that we walked and saw a gorgeous sunset.

Bill built a fire and I had s’mores. A relaxing evening.

Then in the morning we looked out our windshield and saw this sunrise. A beautiful spot to park our RV.

On to Nebraska.

Wednesday, August 23 - North Platt

Tonight’s adventure was at Buffalo Bill’s Ranch. Was the most we’ve paid for only having electricity- $25+$12 for a non-resident of Nebraska. Hot day but a nice breeze blowing. Cooled down at night so good sleeping weather.

Walked around the campground several times. Pretty flowers. In the fall and spring the sand hill cranes come through on their migration route. That would be interesting to see.

Midwestern sunsets are pretty

Lenny and Banjo said enough of the sunset pics, give us our chewies!

The morning sunrise got us up and moving.

Headed to Laramie, Wyoming.

A few things along the way.

The howling coyote. We’ve passed this several times on our Westward Ho trips.

Rocky terrain changed from the flat landscape of the Midwest.

Snow fence is up and ready for the Wyoming winters.

As we were coming close to Laramie, we saw a sign that said we were at 8,600 ft elevation. Temperature is 69 degrees. We pulled into Tie City Campground in the Medicine Bow mountain Range. We’ve wanted to camp here for awhile now.

We can hear thunder but no rain yet. This is where we will park for tonight.

With our America The Beautiful pass the cost was only $5. Nice spot among the aspens.

A hike before dinner. Lots of trails. Back to the campground just in time before a little rain. The sun came out and we saw a faint rainbow.

Bill grilled us chili hamburgers for dinner.

Tonight the temperature is supposed to drop into the 50s. Added a blanket on the bed.

Thursday, August 25

Got a later start today because Bill had to troubleshoot an issue with the emergency breakaway cable. Called Tech Support and got it reset. We are on our way to Green River, Wyoming.

Crossed the Continental Divide on I-80. The landscape is getting very rocky.

Boondocked at White Mountain Dispersed camping. Great spot to view the White Mountains which have no trees, just rocks and see a beautiful sunset and sunrise.  Very windy when we got there.

We walked White Mountain road for several miles.

Friday, August 26

Woke up to this sunrise over the White Mountains.

Today we will be on our way to Nephi, Utah.

Made it to Nephi, Utah, a VERY small town. But they have a quilt shop, one of 2 businesses!!  Who would have thought I’d find one here. A very nice one, too. The owner came from Pittsburgh.

Decided to stay in the Jones High Country Campground in Nephi so we could plug into electric and run the air conditioner. Temperature is around 90. I know there’s little humidity but it’s still hot.

Saturday, August 28

We will be off grid for two days. No cell reception here. Boondocking at Sacramento Pass for the next 2 days.

Exploring Great Basin National Park. Not much to see. It’s a 12 mile dirt road to access it. Pretty barren.

Wheeler Peak in the distance. There’s a hike up to the peak but it’s pretty rugged plus dogs aren’t allowed to hike in the NP. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!!

Has anyone ever seen a sign for a Marmot??

We actually saw one as we were hiking at the Osceola Mining site.

The sun on the mountain is our view from the RV.

 Sunset tonight.

Sunday, August 28

Still boondocking at Sacramento Pass. Decided to drive 7 miles on a dirt road to Osceola where there had been a mining camp for gold.

Not much to see but some pretty wildflowers.

Stopped at this general store for a beer and talked with some other hikers. While there, I picked up a Highway 50 survival guide. A little booklet that gave us ideas where to stop and what to see along the Lonliest Highway.

Took a hike before dinner on the Sacramento Pass trail. A little rocky but was well maintained.

These flowers were blooming all over.

The nights here at the Sacramento Pass are amazing. Looking up in the sky at the twinkling stars we saw a very clear view of the Milky Way. It made you feel so small. My camera couldnt take a good shot so I bought a photo from a local photographer as a memory.

Monday, August 29.

Headed to Fallon, Nevada today. Last stop before Sacramento.

Staying at Latin Farms, a Harvest Host for tonight. It is a balmy 90 degrees. Running the generator so we can have the air conditioner running.

Tomorrow we will be picking up Jillian for her graduation present to the Northwest!!

Summer time in Pennsylvania.

Summer time in PA means listening to outdoor music at wineries and cider it’s, kayaking and enjoying time with friends and family.

Nancy and Chuck Gale visited us for a weekend. Nancy and I spent some time at the Penn State Arboretum. They had a pollinator celebration while we were there.

Then it was on to the Penn State Museum.

Nancy and I in front of the Nittany Lion Paw in front of the museum. We are wondering if they will be moved to the new building.

Gale told me she had two things on her bucket list. One was to kayak and one was to horseback ride. Bill and I were able to help her with the first one so far. We kayaked at Black Moshannon, Bald Eagle SP and Colyer lake. All theee were beautiful and relaxing.

Of course summer wouldn’t be summer without music from Biscuit Jam. Fun with friends at Happy Valley Winery and 814 Cidery.

Kelly’s dad and mom visited from Tennessee, which is always a treat.

Remington Ryde came to Centre Hall so Kristen, Winter and James and Kya listened to some good old time bluegrass music.

Summer sunrises and sunsets at our house were spectacular this year.

My flowers bloomed and bloomed all summer. The hummingbirds like them and their feeders.

Andrea and Bo invited us to join them and the Red River Roadhouse crew to kayak and float on the Clarion Rover. Perfect weather to be on the water.

Next was a quick trip to Nancy and Chuck’s cottage to catch up with each other, hike some more, and kayak on the Little Elk Lake

Lenny and Banjo enjoyed new smells and new trails.

We also attended a Wine, beer, and Cider Festival. Enjoyed tasting everything in NE PA.

Grange Fair usually marks the end of summer because kids and teachers start back to school and the nights cool down. It’s a fun place to eat a lot and to visit with friends and family.

Our next journey will take us across the US to visit Drew, Erin and Shan and Carl, pick up Jillian and head to Oregon and Washington for Jillian’s graduation gift. More posts to follow.
