August 17 - Lenny Walk, Malakof Diggins, Three Forks Brewery

A walk with Lenny on the Champion Mine ditch trail for about 1.5 miles. That’s about all he can do now but for that short hike, he’s sniffing and loping along with us.

Wildlife we saw was a banana slug and a mule deer

The phone is there to show the size of the slug

We took Lenny back to the RV to rest and we drove  the windy, twisty road to Malakof Diggins State Park.

When we arrived at the park, there were 2 rangers that gave us a tour of the preserved town. So much of history. When the town was at its heyday, there were around 2,00 people living and working there.

The bar inside the saloon.  A fun fact. When a customer drank too much and didn’t have a place to spend the night, they could “hangover” the bar for the night … where the term hangover started.

This was their pharmacy.

There was a general store that had just about anything they would need, including a bathtub for sale

We took a hike around the “Diggins” to see the huge cliffs created by the mighty streams of water, washing away entire mountains of gravel to find the gold.

They used this water canon to blow streams of water into the mountains to find gold.

The following is from their website:

The park was created in 1965 by concerned citizens to preserve the exciting and controversial story of our country’s largest hydraulic gold mining operation that devastated the area from the mid-1800s.

Malakoff Diggins is the site of our country’s first environmental law issued by the federal government against the North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company (Sawyer Decision) to curtail the release of the mud, gravel, and debris that clogged streams and major rivers from the foothills down to San Francisco Bay

The controversy was the effects of the hydraulic mining on the environment, sending run off into the American River and the Sacramento River. Even with the Sawyer Decision, it took many years to clean up the land and the rivers.

For dinner we went to Three Forks.

August 16 - Lenny Hike, Crocheting

For Lenny’s hike today, we went to Hirshman’s pond. The trail took us through quiet pine forests, oak woodlands, and open grasslands. A nice relaxing hike.

Lots of big rocks that came from the hydraulic mining that was done in the 1800s.

The rest of the day I crocheted this top

August 15 - Quiet at the House on the Hill

Shan. Carl, and Arlo left to visit friends for several days. So, it’s pretty quiet here at their house.

Shuff and I took Lenny back to the Litton Trail for another short walk.

Then hung out at the RV for the afternoon. I finished a crochet top I had started on our trip. It actually fit.

There is a peach tree in the Alsup’s back yard that has produced a lot of peaches. I made a peach cobbler for dinner. Tomorrow we’ll freeze some of the crop for later.

After dinner walk on Jack’s road (just down the road from their house). Since Lenny’s meds have been changed, he is able to go for short walks and seems to enjoy sniffing as we go.

Night sky was pretty.

August 14 - Short hike and Fair

Shan showed us another hike on the Litton Trail. We only walked about 1 mile but hopefully will be back to see where all it goes.

Arlo had a birthday party and then a nap before we left for the Nevada County Fair. It was fun to see all the buildings being used in the Fairgrounds. When we walk the Fairgrounds during our stay here, the buildings aren’t being used and people talk about the Fair. This year we got to see it for ourselves. It’s only about 1/10 of Grange Fair but it was hopping with rides, food, and exhibits AND BEER!

We walked around to see what all there was  Arlo decided he wanted to ride some. First time on a carny ride and he enjoyed them  it was so fun to see him laugh and enjoy the different ones he was tall enough to ride.

On to the next one - the Bears. He’s in there but you can’t see him

Next he tried a game

Airplane ride with Nana Peg

Arlo’s solo ride on the cars

Finally it was time for what Arlo has been talking about since we came to California - The Monster Truck Show.

First one out the gate rolled over and had to be carted away by a front loader.

The fair at night was a lit up.

Fun times at the fair!

August 13 - Empire Mine Trail and Fire Truck Park

Shuff, Lenny and I went for a 2.5 mile hike on the Empire Mine Trail. Since Lenny had his meds changed, he’s seems like he wants to do more with us. We only carried him about 1/2 mile.

After we picked Arlo up from Gigi’s, he wanted to go back to the firetruck park.

Dinner and an early night. Tomorrow is a big day … Nevada County Fair and Monster Truck Show!

August 12 - Mommy’s home, Pioneer Park, Train Table, Dinner with Donna

Arlo didn’t go to Gigi’s today so we went to the Firetruck Park to play. Great play equipment

A fancy teeter totter. Remember, ours was a wooden board with a seat on either end.

After Arlo’s nap it was time to go to Donna’s to pick up the Thomas The Train Table and all the pieces and parts. A very special gift for sure  Arlo will have so much fun  of course, so will we!

Dinner was Carl’s special red sauce with ravioli, garlic bread and a salad.

Beautiful sky at Shan and Carl’s place to end our night.

August 11 - Arlo’s Soccer/T-Ball Practice

I took Arlo to Gigi’s and then went to my Aquasize class at Pioneer pool. Perfect day to be in the pool.

Carl took off to go on a run near Bowman’s Lake.

After Gigi’s, it was time for soccer/t-ball practice. Today was picture day. Arlo didn’t want his picture taken. He just wanted to play.

Even though he didn’t want a group photo, he enjoyed playing.
