May 30 - Big Lagoon County Park

We decided to change our direction a little and head south on Route 101 again.

Driving along the coast, it’s hard not to take photos.

Tonight we stayed in a small county park called Big Lagoon, just north of Trinidad. If you like small parks tucked in among a forest and a lagoon as your view, this is the park for you. We think it’s a little gem. It was very windy when we arrived but we still took a walk along the lagoon. There was only one other tenter then. Now at 8 pm, there are 3 RVs and the tent.

This is the lagoon.

This is from our campsite.

We sat outside and read and listened to the waves crashing. Very peaceful and relaxing day.

After dinner we took a walk to the other side of the lagoon … the ocean side. The waves were roaring and crashing with intensity.

It was too windy for Banjo so he hopped in my coat.

These were the same plant we’d seen when we walked the beach at Trinidad but they were yellow.

May 29 - 30,000 steps in Bandon

One full day in Bandon so we had to do it all-beach and Bandon!! We first took the dogs for a hike around the campground. Luckily Bandon was only, 2 miles away from our campground .There wasn’t a trail but there was a wide area for bikes and walkers.

We think this is an osprey nest.

The Coquille River runs next to our campground. Part of it is the Bandon Marsh or as Bill calls it, a swamp.

First store we saw was a wool shop!

A stop at Bandon Brewery for a beer and a cider. Bill didn’t like the beer but the cranberry cider from Rain Cidery was good.

It was time to have some clam chowder for lunch at Tony’s Crab Shop.

That was so good that we decided to get a quart of lobster bisque from the market for dinner. There was an interesting museum with sculptures made from trash out of the ocean. The artist and volunteers are trying to make people help people become aware of how important it is to place their trash in the proper receptacles.

We visited a few shops and then taste some cheese and ann ice cream cone from the creamery for the walk back.

Once back at the campground, we took a rest before walking to the beach. Saw this quote in the creamery.

After a couple hours rest, we hiked to the beach one last time.

Beth had given me a pair of toe socks. I tried them on this 30,000 step day and my feet didn’t hurt or get tired.

May 28 - Travel to Bandon, OR

Bill and I decided to continue our trip to Bandon since we had reservations. The trip up Route 101 along the coast is beautiful, seeing the rugged coast and the crashing waves.

Arrived at Bullards Beach State Park, parked the RV in a nice, private site and then took off for a 1.25 mile hike to the beach.

Weather has been great, sunny blue skies and temps in the 60s.

Fog is moving in. Love it here

May 27 - A Walk Through The Redwoods

Today was spent among the redwoods in the National and State Park. So majestic and tall.

We first visited Lady Bird Johnson Grove and stood among the tall beauties.

The next hike was on the Cal Barrel forest road trail.

As we were walking through the redwood forest, Ken noticed an issue with his eye. After talking with several ophthalmologists, Ken and Beth decided to fly home for surgery for a detached retina. They drove our car back to Sacramento to catch a flight to Baltimore.

May 26 - Travel to Trinidad, CA

Up bright and early to get on the road to Trinidad, CA, to see the redwood forest. Took a picture of Carl’s pond before we left. The tadpoles are very happy with the clean pond.

Here’s how we ride

From Nevada City, we headed northwest through orchards and farmland. Then we started climbing on windy, twisty roads. Thank heavens for a good navigator!

Made it to Trinidad, CA and our Sounds of the Sea Campground. The name is quite apropos because you can hear the waves crashing and sea lions barking.

Lots of pretty flowers at the campground.

And at the beach we saw these. My phone says they are sour figs.

1898 Fog Bell that tolls every day at noon in honor of those lost or buried at sea.

Glad we got to see these beautiful sunsets over the pacific.

May 24 - Hike along the Yuba and Scott’s Flat

Beth and Ken survived the night!!!

Sat around in the Pavilion to use the wi-fi and relax before hiking.

Then, off to the Yuba on Hoyt’s Crossing Trail. It was roaring. They were warning people not to swim in the Yuba because of the amount of rushing water.

Hoyt’s Crossing is also known as the “naked trail.”  Was not disappointed this time either.

Beth and I decided to dip our toes in the Yuba. Once we got numb, it wasn’t too bad 🤣

Notice Ken didn’t it get in the water.

Back at the RV for lunch and then a hike to show them Scott’s Flat Lake. Beautiful blue-green water, which was definitely warmer than the Yuba.

After all that hiking, we made pizzas at the RV and a great bottle of wine from Happy Valley Winery.

While we are on the road to Oregon, Drew, Carl, Shannon and Arlo take of on their adventure to South Korea. Here are some of the photos they’ve been sending back:

A new pilot for the trip!!

What would uncle Drew think of this??

Asleep with his lovey.
