March 17 - Route 60 from Socorro NM to Globe AZ

Route 60 is a mix of beautiful landscapes, plains, mountains, canyons and Apache Reservation.

We passed the Radio and Astronomy Observatory.

Staying 2 nights in Globe so we can do some exploring and hiking.

June 9 - John Day Fossil Beds

From the Lava Beds National Monument, we drove to John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This whole area has been such a surprise to Bill and I. When you look at a map you don’t see many roads or towns so we didn’t think there was much here.

Boy were we incorrect. There’s lots of hiking and the scenery is gorgeous.

We are staying in the small town of Dayville at the South Fork Campground. After we set up, we walked the town.

Tomorrow we are planning to go hiking at the Blue Basin unit of the Fossil Beds.

April 24 - Snowshoeing in Truckee

Today our 10,000+ steps was snowshoeing at Cold Stream Canyon trail. Again, beautiful weather for a hike. Can you believe that the trail we were on had 6 feet of snow on top of the road. Hard to believe there is still that much left.

Banjo had a mishap and fell into a runoff stream. Bill had to rescue him and I made a makeshift carry wrap for him because he was shivering.

Cold Stream Lake was beautiful, partially snow and ice covered.

After a 3-1/2 hr hike, we made it back to the car. All 4 of us were starved so we headed to 50/50 Brewery. Luckily I had brought food for the boys so all were happy.

Of course, I need to post my daily pic of Arlo and Shan. Notice Arlo is awake but Shan is catching a few winks.

Moving on to Bowie, Arizona

For the next few days, we'll be boondocking in Indian Bread Rocks. Amazing rock formations.

From a top one of the rock mountains.

This is our backdrop.

Enjoyed spending some time with our “next door neighbor,” Connie and Tom and Rider. Lenny and Rider played together some.

Went exploring to Chirachua National Monument and Bonita Canyon. These rock formations seemed to be precariously situated. Kept waiting for one to fall.

In the exhibit we visited, I learned that Cochise lived in the Dragoon Mountains in this area and was buried here.

Since this is a National Monument, I got a stamp for my Travel Passport book.

On our way back to the RV, we stopped at Fort Bowie. This fort protected the Apache Pass which was traveled by immigrants and mail carriers. Another stamp for my Passport book!

Since there isn’t any ambient light around here, the night skit lights up beautifully.

Look what we woke up to on Tuesday

Here’s what we woke up to this morning - the difference a day makes.

Lew, Denise, Lloyd and Vilma decided it was too cold here, so they left 2 days early to head south.

It quit snowing about 2 pm so we headed up to the Canyon to see what it looked like in the snow. At first, there wasn’t much of a view, then it cleared a little and the sun shone. It was gorgeous.

We drove east on Route 64 and got these shots.

We got lucky and saw 2 elk as we were coming back.

One last selfie before we leave the Grand Canyon tomorrow for Tucson.

Bill and Lew hike out of the Canyon (Monday)

Today is the day Lew and Bill hike out of the Grand Canyon. Excited to hear their stories.

There was a frost last night.

Lenny, Banjo and I waited at the Bright Angel trailhead, sitting in the sun. It’s very windy here today but bright sun.

Here they come.

Lenny was so excited to see Bill.

We are going to celebrate by going out to a steakhouse for dinner tonight. I’m sure the stories will flow.

Here is Bill's rendition of their adventures:

“Got to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon the afternoon of the 7th. Friday morning brother Lew and I were at the Backcountry Office to see if we could get permits to camp in the Canyon. We scored a permit for. Saturday and Sunday nights at Indian Gardens. We were sure excited to be able to hike the Canyon together.

We hit Bright Angel about 7:30 and were setting up camp at 10:30, 4.5 miles and 3,040 feet lower. We left the backpacks at camp and hiked 1 1/2 miles to Plateau Point to take in the view.

Our second day we day hiked the rest of the way down Bright Angel to see Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch, a little over 5 miles and another 1,300 feet drop in elevation. After a quick lunch we decided to hike up South Kaibab to The Tip off about 1,500 feet in 2.5 miles. Then across the Tonto Trail back to Indian Gardens.  12 miles total in about 9 hours.

Monday morning we hiked from the campground to the rim and made the trailhead at noon

What a great experience to share with my little brother!  24 miles of awesome scenery and lots of new stories. Thanks Lewie..”
